Exeter Signal Atlas
Signal strength measured by Ofcom's Spectrum Assurance vans on Exeter's roads in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Each square is a 100 m grid cell coloured by the median strongest-cell power (RSRP) across every van pass through it.
How much of the driven network clears each signal level
What Ofcom's coverage prediction says for Exeter
Operators' own predictions, published in Connected Nations 2025 (snapshot 1 July 2025) for Exeter local authority (E07000041): 62,918 premises over 4,709 grid squares of 100 m. These are modelled, not measured, so they cover every building, not only the roads.
96.5%
of premises have indoor 4G from all four operators
99.3%
of Exeter's area has outdoor 4G from all four operators
3.0%
of premises have outdoor 5G from three or more operators (at −110 dBm)
99.3%
of premises have outdoor 5G Standalone from at least one operator
Reading this data
- Readings come from roof-mounted antennas on the vans with no correction for antenna gain. A phone inside a car or a building will see weaker signal.
- The vans drive for other work, not coverage surveys, so only roads they used are covered: 8 hours in Oct–Nov 2022, about 1 hour in Sep 2023 and 3 hours in Jul 2024 (4G).
- Thresholds follow Ofcom: 4G outdoor −105 dBm and indoor/in-car −95 dBm; 5G high confidence −110 dBm and very high confidence −100 dBm (SS-RSRP).
- 5G for O2 and Vodafone is missing: the scanner was not tuned to their 5G channels in the Exeter passes. That does not mean they have no 5G here.
- Each cell value is a median of per-pass medians, so a van parked with the scanner running counts once. One such stop logged about 480,000 5G readings in 2022.
- In 3D view, column height is the signal level above the weakest value on the chart axis, exaggerated 14 m per dB. Colour carries the same value, so the flat view loses nothing.
- Basemap roads, rail, water and parks are from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL), bundled into the page.
- The grid is also saved as
data/derived/exeter_grid_100m.gpkg (EPSG:27700) for QGIS.
